We are considering entry-grade candidates, either from a graduate engineer or PhD level, to be based in our head office in Lisbon (Portugal).

The successful candidate(s) should combine a strong analytical background with excellent written and communication skills in English. The successful candidate(s) will be self-motivated and enthusiastic about renewables, and will be able to make a material contribution to the team from an early stage. Typically, team members work on many different projects over the course of a year in the context of loads analysis and advanced numerical modelling and research, often running multiple projects in parallel. The team has a strong high-performance culture where individual responsibility is given early and where continuous feedback and coaching is offered to ensure the quality, speed and technical content of our delivery continues to be industry-leading. The role directly involves the enhancement of Cruz Atcheson’s advanced numerical modelling capabilities. Typical duties include:

  • Performing load calculations for wind turbines (offshore fixed or floating), WECs and tidal turbines, using open-source packages such as FAST and WEC-Sim

  • Analysing and researching complex phenomena in the area of aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, structural dynamics, control response, etc.

  • Understanding the highly coupled nature of a turbine / WEC system, and how the loads are linked to the structural components, as well as the overall cost of energy

  • Liaising with the other technical disciplines available at Cruz Atcheson and in its wide network of partners (e.g. structural analysis)

  • Communicating with clients, both in written and oral forms

  • Writing clear technical reports

  • Assisting with general group activities, which may include the development of internal tools such as software scripts

After development and depending on skills, future duties may include:

  • Preparing proposals and manage projects

  • Supporting software developments with new advanced features

  • Providing training in the use of custom-built software and technology design processes to customers worldwide

  • Providing thought leadership to the sector in the form of conference papers, seminars, etc.

  • Occasional travel worldwide of a short-term nature (visits to customers, trade-fairs, conferences, etc.)

Cruz Atcheson is an independent renewable energy consultancy, active in the wave, tidal and offshore wind sectors. We provide technical and engineering services, software development and training to a wide range of clients across the world. The company’s core staff has vast experience in the field, and we are looking to expand our engineering department due to the growing demand for our services.

Our concept design team provides world-leading design consultancy for wind turbines, wave energy converters (WECs) and tidal turbines. We provide support services that enable our customers to progress from an early stage to viable designs. With a combined experience of over 50 years in technology development, we have directly contributed to the design and analysis of numerous of WEC, wind and tidal turbine concepts. The team brings together recognised industry experts in numerical modelling, control, mechanical and marine engineering in an international and friendly working environment.

One of Cruz Atcheson’s core expertise focuses on performing load calculations for onshore, offshore fixed and floating wind turbines, WECs and tidal turbines, as well as advanced numerical modelling with a strong R&D component. Typical clients include technology developers / wind turbine manufacturers who require support for their design or optimisation investigations / international R&D consortium projects. We also provide technical due diligence support to project developers, owners / operators and investors who require independent advice.

Essential Skills
  • Masters’ degree in engineering, physics or mathematics field with high grades

  • Understanding of aerodynamic and hydrodynamic loads, structural dynamics and general mechanical engineering theory

  • Experience in the use of an aero-elastic software such as FAST, Bladed, HAWC

  • Experience in the use of hydrodynamic software’s such as WAMIT, NEMOH, WEC-Sim, OpenFOAM

  • Good programming skills (MATLAB, Simulink, Python, C++, etc.)

  • Proficient in MS Office programs

Desirable Skills
  • A PhD in engineering or physics, preferably in the area of structural dynamics or aero/hydro-dynamics

  • Experience in renewable energy and / or engineering consultancy

  • Good knowledge or expertise in loads analysis, aero-elasticity and / or multibody dynamics

  • Knowledge of design standards (e.g. wind turbine)
